A Bit of Jogging, No Cocci Study Group

Recovery continues, and here's a pic of the family at our school's Jog-A-Thon fundraiser from a few weeks ago. Denise really wanted to participate with the kids so she trained leading up to the event and jogged 3/4 of the way around the track before deciding she'd better not push it. She had no heart problems, no dizziness/balance/coordination problems, no numbness. Yay! Adding to good news, her latest cocci titers again show no active infection and the doctor thought that since things are going so well we can again skip the lumbar puncture, MRI, & CT to determine if it's active in brain/cerebral spinal fluid. Seems the voriconazole is doing a very nice job of keeping the cocci inactive where the fluconazole didn't work for her. The downside is that there were more precancerous growths that had to be frozen off. So while we're glad for the medication protecting her from the cocci, the side effect is a bummer. She's slathering on the sunscreen all the time, wearing wide-brimmed hats, and will spend the summer in longer clothing than most other people. A minor adjustment, given the alternative.
The cocci study group happened a few weeks ago. This is the first time in several years that I did not attend... we just had too many weekends where I had to be gone, I didn't want to add another.  Knowing how slow new drugs work through R&D, manufacture, and approval on the way to market, I'm confident I didn't miss anything earth-shaking this year. But I did miss seeing the familiar faces and rubbing elbows with top dogs in cocci research, though. I look forward to going next year.
